Frequently Asked Questions
“I already have the weight at loading (bulkweigher). Why another scale?”
The loadout weight is what left the silo, not what stayed in the railcar or what arrived. The Dynamic Rail Scale gives an independent weight on the line, confirms the loadout, catches calibration drift and covers points without a loadout (transshipment, receiving). It's verification, not redundancy.
“There's no legal or fiscal requirement to weigh on the track.”
Correct, so it's not compliance, it's money. Freight is billed by weight: a weight error becomes overbilling on every line of the invoice. And above the load limit, the railcar's reduction is charged to you.
“I trust the railroad's weight / the origin weight.”
Until the railroad re-weighs and disputes it, then whoever holds an auditable, calibrated record wins. SIMMSOFT is your traceable evidence to back the dispute.
“I've never heard of MASSA, you're from Brazil.”
MASSA operates across every heavy sector in Brazil and has in-house manufacturing. There are already 85+ scales in operation, 20 years in the market, and at a single terminal our scale weighs 5,000 railcars a day.
“What about NTEP / legal-for-trade certification?”
For commercial custody, NTEP / Handbook 44 applies, and we're transparent about it. The fastest entry is through process control, verification and overweight protection (which don't require NTEP) plus SIMMSOFT, which runs on the certified scales you already have. NTEP is on the roadmap.
“Installing a rail scale means construction and line downtime.”
The market reference is a modular rail installed in hours, replacing sections over the existing ballast, with no concrete or trench. Our solution targets the same: fast installation and low disruption.
“What's the ROI?”
Every client has a different ROI, we can set up a meeting and understand yours better. In general, our scale works on three fronts: recovers freight overbilling, avoids overweight cost and detects in-transit loss/shrinkage. On a block route of 110 railcars, a fraction of a percentage point of error per railcar already pays for the system.
“Does it integrate with my SCADA/ERP? And cybersecurity?”
Yes. SIMMSOFT integrates with any SCADA/production system, with certified cybersecurity, and exports to your ERP/fiscal system.
